Will Be FriendsAniu:
Thanks so much for addressing the word “relationship”. This is one word that I wish the polish language had a direct all encompassing equivalent for. Sure would make life easier, and I would avoid making huge social gaffes. Unfortunately, I still sometimes translate directly from english when I am writing or speaking polish and this is where I run into the most trouble.

Hi Anna
“I can say that I have a good relationship with my dad, and everybody knows it means we get along. I can say that I have a good relationship with my neighbor, and everybody knows it means”.
Of course everybody knows it means..me too. You can say this only in one way in Polish : Ja jestem w dobrych “stosunkach” (plural) z moim tatą and Jestem w dobrych “stosunkach” z moim sąsiadem. But if I try to translate the word “stosunek”(singular) or “stosunki”(plural) into English I am in big trouble too You can see:
rate
ratio
proportion
quotient
nooky
nobling
dealings
What are you thinking about?
yeah Anna O., but if I say that “jestem w dobrych stosunkach z moim tatą” it sounds VERY official and stiff, not to mention ungrammatical. I’d rather say something like “z tatą dogadujemy się wspaniale” or “jesteśmy na dobrej stopie” and while more casual than “I have a good relationship with my dad” it means more or less the same - “my dad and I get along great.”
Right?
PS. Updated to add - Psze put me back on the straight and narrow, it IS grammatically correct. Mea culpa. And thanks! I shall be counting on you, Psze, to be my not-so-secret grammar overseer.
There is nothing ungrammatical in “jestem w dobrych stosunkach z moim tatą”.

Thanks psze!
Though it just doesn’t SOUND right, now does it? Weird. But at least it’s grammatically correct then.
Psze,
sorry to bother you, but could you be so kind and recommend your favorite top three Polish dictionaries? Poprawna polszczyzna and the like? I’d be really grateful! And you seem to know this stuff! Thanks!
And Happy Holidays to you too!
